A pair of puck moving defensemen were moved over the weekend. Tomas Kaberle, who had been acquired in a trade for Peter Mueller last season, was trade for penalty killing RW Lauri Korpikoski. Tomas provided veteran leadership to a young defense core, but depth at RW has been an issue for the franchise since it's creation. Additionally another hole at RW was created when elite checker Cal Clutterbuck was moved with Drew Doughty for power forward Evander Kane and defensemen Victor Hedman. The Tigers had been excited to grab elite defensemen Drew Doughty at the start of the second round of the expansion draft, but Kane and Hedman are two young players that could be on the cusp of greatness. Time will tell...

Ya, he became redundant as soon as I traded for Kane.

Following an unispiring start to the season, a couple of trades featuring high profile Tigers have occured. First Derek Stepan and Kyle Turris were shipped to Moncton for the oft injured Jason Spezza and prospect Tomas Hertl. Stepan had been underperforming on a top line with one of the most talented snipers in the league. As per GM Clark, "We hope that introducing a skilled passer and puck handled like Jason into the top line will open some more oppurtunities for Phil. Derek has been an everyday player for this team, but we just weren't seeing the ability that we needed at the top level." Kyle Turris had been producing at a good level, but getting a blue chip LW prospect back made him expendable.
In the second trade Shane Doan and superstar prospect Nathan Mackinnon were sent to Seattle for Nail Yakupov and Sean Monahan. Doan had been held off the scoresheet despite his 27 attempts. "The chemistry just hasn't been there and with Selanne's career on the back end, we saw an opportunity to add a second sniper on the right side and went for it. Getting a prospect who was once thought to be the top prospect of his draft year in the mix doesn't hurt either. The hope is that moving Mackinnon to a situation where he could ultimately play with former Tiger Stamkos doesn't come back to burn us down the road."
It appears noone is safe in Hamilton.

On the ice the Tigers minimized the damage done by duelling superstars Crosby and Stamkos to a goal a piece, but got three out of Ladd to secure the victory. Off the ice, the team's last draft pick this offseason was moved with struggling young defensemen Dimitri Kulikov to bring in veteran Mike Cammalleri to shore up the wing.

Nathan Gerbe and his defensive acumen return to the franchise who he last saw action with the team as a Texan before the relocation. He was acquired with a 3rd round pick for defensive prospect Rasmus Ristolainen who recently scored the winning goal at the World Junior Championship. A glut of young defensemen including Nurse, Koeokkoek, Klefbom, Hamilton, Brodin, Fowler and Hedman made letting go such a tantalizing prospect a posibility.

Hamilton is excited to see a number of Tigers playing for their countries at the upcoming Olympics:
Nikolai Kulemin (Russia), Sergei Bobrovsky (Russia) Phil Kessel (United States), Matt Carle (United States) Jonas Hiller (World) Brayden Schenn (Canada West) Tomas Hertl (Czech Republic) Alexander Barkov (Finland), Teemu Selanne (Finland) Victor Hedman (Sweden), Jonas Brodin (Sweden)
The one surprising omission being Andrew Ladd. THough, as we've come to expect from Andrew, not a single complaint came from his camp about the snub.

The rebuild has been going better than hoped, making the Tigers buyers at this year's trade deadline. Kimmo Timonen joined the team from the expansion Mountain Men. Going the other way were defensive prospect Slater Koekkoek and the 3rd round pick acquired from Ottawa just before the Olympic break. Timonen is a stalwart veteran and will take over 1st unit power play immediately.

Three more players made their way to Hamilton at the trade deadline. Jonathan Toews was brought over in a trade with the Titans that saw Hamilton part with Jason Spezza who had been acquired earlier in the season along with young prospects Sean Monahan and Brayden Schenn. GM Clark was quoted as "Those are three great players and that trade could certainly come back to bite us a few years down the road; however, that is the price you have to pay to bring in a bonified #1 centre, who still has a long career as a Tiger ahead of him." The second trade saw veteran Brooks Laich and a familiar 1st round pick come to Hamilton for promising young goaltender Jacob Markstrom. Brooks is expected to centre the third line going forward. And finally that pick went back out as fast as it came, going with Jonas Brodin to Cambridge for defensive stud Michael Del Zotto. "He brings a fantastic combination of strength and speed and let's us take a little of the pressure off Luke in our own end. I would hope none of the players moved should take that as a knock on themselves, It certainly wouldn't be out the question to see any of the guys we had to part with this week in a Tigers jersey again, just ask J.J. Hopefully these new faces mesh quickly with the group and while things worked out a little ahead of schedule, we're certainly planning on making a name for ourselves in the Campbell and NLHS for years to come, starting with this year's playoffs."

After exiting the playoffs sooner than hoped, the Tigers made the first two steps towards the future adding two highly skilled forwards. Coming to Hamilton by way of the dispersal draft are Tyler Seguin and Jeff Carter, picked 11th and 25th overall. Both players provide some versatility to the lineup going forward as Seguin played LW for the Wanderers last year, but can fill in quite nicely at C, and Carter centered the reigning champions, but could settle into the right side as needed. The Tigers saw only 5 teams light the lamp fewer times and ideally adding these two snipers to the lineup will put a few more teams behind us in NLHS5.

Time to clear up the rumours ahead of the dispersal draft. The Tigers brought in Mike Cammalleri & Jay Bouwmeester in an attempt to bolster roster depth last year; however both those players and highly regarded prospects Tomas Hertl and Darnell Nurse are headed to The Outlaws. Coming back, The Tigers new assistant captain, Shea Weber. Not much needs to be said about the defensive juggernaught who helped lead the Legion to the top of the pack last year. Bring on NLHS5.......

The expansion draft has wrapped up and four members of the Howl are off to new homes next year. Rich Clune moves to Scranton after joining the team through free agency last year. Joining him in Scranton will be John Scott who was brought to the team as a roster balancing piece as part of the Toews acquisition. 1571 days, the total length of service of Jonas Hiller and Mark Fayne. Round 3 and 18 expansion draft selections in NLHS3, prior to current management's takeover. Also of note today Michael Haley, Nolan Yonkman and Roman Cervenka announced their retirements from NLHS5.
