SCOUTS TO HOLD DRAFT PARTY AT THE BLUELINE HOCKEY BAR IN KC
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
The Kansas City Scouts will hold their 2012 NLHS Entry Draft Party this Saturday night at The Blue Line, Kansas City's only hockey-themed sports bar. Scouts D-Men Shane O'Brien and Ian White, Goalies Craig Anderson and Ben Bishop and forwards Matt Halischuk and Jiri Tlusty are scheduled to attend, provided they aren't traded in the meantime. (That was a little tongue-in-cheek by this sports reporter. I couldn't resist. But it could happen!)
There will be door prizes including autographed Scouts jerseys, pucks, sticks, pennants, photos, Scouts tickets, passes to the Scouts Fan Convention and more.
The Scouts have a late 1st round pick. There is speculation that many trades may happen during the draft. Our Scouts have certainly been active traders since the Expansion Draft. Should be an interesting night. Come check out the action at the Blueline Hockey Bar this Saturday night. The activities start at 5:30 p.m. this Saturday night. See you there, Scouts fans...

SCOUTS SELECT F- MATT READ IN 1ST ROUND OF NLHS ENTRY DRAFT
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
When Kansas City Scouts Assistant GM/Head Coach Mark Messier stepped up to the podium to make the teams first ever Entry Draft selection, many of the Kansas City supporters were restless. Can't say as I blame them, as the Scouts have made some questionable moves since the Expansion Draft.
When Messier announced Matt Read as the Scouts selection, the groans were from some of the other GM's present. Seems the Scouts made a pretty good pick.
"There were some intriguing prospects still on the board due to some GM's not attending or sending a list. We feel like we filled a need with Matt Read. He is someone who can step in and help us right away. ", said Messier.

SCOUTS TRADE D-MAN O'BRIEN FOR PAIR OF 3RD ROUND PICKS
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
The Kansas City Scouts dealt defenseman Shane O'Brien to the Montreal Wanderers, in exchange for two 3rd round picks in the ongoing Entry Draft. The Scouts seem to be stockpiling picks to plug their gaping roster holes and/or draft prospects. It will be interesting to see how the Scouts do in these next rounds of the Entry Draft.

SCOUTS DEAL NEXT YEAR'S 1ST ROUNDER TO LEGION FOR 2ND ROUND ENTRY DRAFT PICKS
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
The Kansas City Scouts have dealt their 1st round pick in the NLHS 4 Entry Draft to the Stanley Cup Champion Philadelphia Legion in exchange for two 2nd round picks in the ongoing Expansion Draft. The pick the Scouts dealt is a potential lottery pick.
"The price was high, but we feel there are some quality players in the second round that we can use to better our position right now and into the future." , said Dan Brown, Scouts Owner and GM.
The Scouts still have a 1st rounder in the NLHS Entry Draft 4, which they picked up in an earlier trade with the Kentucky Racers. The Scouts now have 2 picks in the 2nd round, 5 picks in the 3rd round and also a 4th rounder in the ongoing Entry Draft. Should be intersting to see who they draft in the coming week.

SCOUTS DRAFT D- JUSTIN FAULK, C- MARK SCHEIFELE IN 2ND ROUND OF NLHS ENTRY DRAFT
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
The Kansas City Scouts have picked up some good talent in the 2nd round of the Entry Draft. Defenseman Justin Faulk was selected with pick #6 as teams again inexplicably failed to turn draft list in to the League Office by the deadline. "We were suprised Faulk was still on the board after the 1st round", said Scouts Assistant GM and Head Coach Mark Messier. "This guy has tremendous upside potential"
The Scouts also drafted center Mark Scheifele with the 10th pick in the 2nd. "This guy's gonna be one hell of a center for us in the not too distant future", said Messier. " The Scouts do have a plan in place here, and the way our draft is playing out it should give our fans plenty to get excited about for the future of this hockey club."
It has been a heck of a draft so far for the Scouts. Are there any gems left to unearth in round 3?

SCOUTS SELECT F- TEUVO TERAVAINEN WITH 1ST SELECTION IN 3rd ROUND OF ENTRY DRAFT
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
This news is delayed a couple of days since the Scouts Administrative Offices were closed in observance of Independence Day...
The Kansas City Scouts selected talented forward prospect Teuvo Teravainen with the Kansas City Scouts 1st selection in the 3rd round of the NLHS Entry Draft.
"It was really nice having the 1st pick in a round for a change. There was no doubt who we were going to take with that pick. We are delighted that Teravainen was still on the board for us. We had him going in the first or second round at the latest." , said Mark Messier, Scouts Assisant GM and Head Coach. "He's got soft hands, great speed and has tremendous offensive potential. He easily could be a top-6 forward for us in the future."
A gem indeed for the Scouts with the first pick in round number three.

SCOUTS SELECT CENTER AND PAIR OF DEFENSIVE PROSPECTS WITH THEIR REMAINING THIRD ROUND PICKS IN ENTRY DRAFT
by Scott Zimmermann Scouts Beat Reporter
The Kansas City Scouts selected more prospects for the future with their remaining 3rd round picks in the NLHS Entry Draft. The Scouts took center Scott Laughton with the 5th pick, then took defensive prospects Jordan Schmaltz and Slater Koekkoek with the 12th and 14th picks.
"We think Scott Laughton could surprise many and both Schmaltz and Koekkoek are both potential top-4 defensemen. We believe we are having a very solid draft. Of course, time will tell, but we are extremely pleased with the direction our initial Entry Draft has gone." , said Dan Brown, Kansas City Scouts Owner and General Manager.

KANSAS CITY STAR JULY 6, 2012 ENTRY DRAFT EARLY IMPRESSIONS THRU ROUND 3*
*Note - Does not factor in any trades, solely draft picks in the first 3 rounds of the NLHS 3 Entry Draft.
Wales Conference Edition
-Adams Division-
Nova Scotia Titans - (1) D- Nathan Beaulieu (3) C- Jim O'Brien <Bealieu is a D-man with solid upside potential. O'Brien is the question mark here.> Moncton Mariners- (1) D- Dmtry Orlov (3) C - Casey Cizikas <Orlov may be a stretch (or a steal!) with a high first round pick. Only time will tell. Cizikas is a two-way center with good upside.>
Montreal Wanderers - (1) R- Filip Forsberg (2) R- Nick Johnson (3) R- Andrew Gordon, C- Keith Aucoin <Forsberg could be a steal. Johnson and Gordon are good depth/role players.>
Ottawa 67's - (1) D- Frederic St. Denis (2) L- Harry Zolnierczyk (3) D- T.J. Brennan <The 67's got some fairly useful players, but were also penalized in all 3 rounds under the league's new no-chat, no-list rule.>
Quebec Nordiques - (1) D- Nate Guenin (2) D- Hampus Lindholm, D- Derreck Pouliot, L- David Ullstrom (3) D- Jacob Trouba <The Nordiques did very well in bolstering their blueline. Quebec definitely got the favorite PA Announcer name in this year's draft when they snagged Trouba. Ullstrom is a versatile forward as well.>
London Dryden's Habs - (2) C- Brendan Guance (3) D-Cody Ceci <Very nice picks. Both could very well turn into first line players.>
-Patrick Division-
Philadelphia Legion -(1) D-Roman Josi (2) C- Gabriel Bourque <Solid, safe picks for the reigning NLHS Stanley Cup Champions.>
Nashville Huskies - (1) L- Marcus Foligno (2) L- Stefan Motteau < Both solid wingers and could be sleepers in this draft.>
Kentucky Racers - Did not have a pick in the draft, but deserve honorable mention for transfroming an expansion team roster into legitimate contenders via astute trading.>
New York Aces- (1) R- Jaromir Jagr (2) D- Mark-Andre Bourdin (3) C- Mark Antoine Pouliot <Jagr will help at least for a year or two. Bourdin and Pouliot are depth players. Unfortunately, the no-chat, no-list penalty shuffled the deck on the Aces 3 times.>
New Jersey Outlaws- (1) D- Philip Larsen (2) R- Jimmy Hayes (3) L- Ryan Russell <Larsen is a servicable D-Man, but not worthy of a 1st round pick. Hayes could turn into a good winger. Russell is a role-player. The Outlaws also got lassoed 3 times by the no-chat, no list penalty.>
Chicago Bootleggers - (1) L- Eric Wellwood, D-Brendan Smith (2) D- Brayden McNabb (3) R- Tim Wallace, L- Tim Kennedy < Smith is a talented defender. McNabb has potential on the blueline also. Kennedy could be a versatile forward. Wellwood and Wallace are strictly depth guys. Elliott Ness would be proud as the Bootleggers got thwarted in all 3 rounds by the no-chat, no list penalty. This hurt Chicago big-time, because they held 2 first round and 2 third round draft picks.>

My spreadsheet says that Cizikas's career potential is a two-way center with upside. That would be a fantastic add.

I made a mega-spreadsheet a couple months before the draft.
the columns, IIRC went like this:
Player || NHL Team || Projection || Age || Interest
Makes it SO much easier.
That's how I chose Orlov. (Especially looking at his numbers from World Juniors a couple years back - holy smokes...over a point per game on a gold-medal-winning team as a DEFENSEMAN???)
