NLHSF COMING TO TOWNMoncton Mariners move farm team to Saint John Team to be known as the Knights[/size] By: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Moncton Mariners general manager Justin Fox knew this had to happen. When the NLHS Farm League announced that, after a year hiatus with a summer league to serve as the farm league, it would be returning, Fox knew he had to bring his farm team closer to Moncton in case of an urgent call up. Enter Saint John. It was the closest city with a viable arena to Moncton, about half an hour shorter than Charlottetown, PEI, or Bathurst. And thus, Fox installed his team into Harbour Station. The team, which will be known as the Knights, revealed a logo, but said uniforms will come some time next month. The team is called the Knights due to the fact that Saint John was where the first Knights of Pythias were established in the British Empire. They will, according to Fox, wear silver, black, and red, a sharp contrast to the Mariners' blue and gold.

Knights Reveal Jerseys Mismatching home and awayBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Knights, proud affiliate of the Moncton Mariners, have revealed their jerseys. The intriguing thing is that the home and road jerseys do not match in terms of striping as well as crest. The red home jersey features a traditional striping pattern, with black stripes and silver trim. The crest is not the primary logo, but a partial one with the knight's head from the primary. The white road jersey, on the other hand, features a less traditional striping pattern and features the full crest with script. The name is inside the black shoulder yoke. Following the Entry Draft, the Knights will reveal the team's leadership.

Knights Name Club Leaders Strait to be captain; Matthias, Hertl alternatesBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer The Saint John Knights, proud affiliate of the Moncton Mariners, have revealed the team's leadership. After captaincy front-runner Casey Cizikas was lost in the expansion draft due to an accidental omission on the Mariners' expansion draft protected list, the team decided to give the C to defenseman Brian Strait. Strait, 25, was an alternate captain to Matt Gilroy during his junior year at Boston University. This is his first year of NLHS eligibilty; he was playing with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins the last two seasons, putting up just 16 points and a +1 in 67 games. The team also announced that the alternate captains will be Shawn Matthias and Tomas Hertl. Hertl, a rookie ineligible for the pro league, put up 18 goals and 30 points in 43 games for HC Slavia Praha in the Czech Extraliga, and later put up 8 points in 11 playoff games. Hertl also played at the World Junior Championships, putting up 5 points in 6 games for the Czech Republic. He was an alternate captain for the Czech team that finished in fifth place, and scored the winning goal in the fifth place game against Switzerland. Matthias, 25, is a center that's still growing into his body. He played in the Summer League last year with the Cleveland Kings, putting up 3 goals and 4 assists in 14 regular season games along with 3 assists in the Kings' heartbreaking seven game loss in the Calder Cup Final against the Seattle Thunderbirds.

Farm Depth Chief Concern for Moncton Knights to hopefully receive solid forwardsBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer Moncton Mariners GM Justin Fox has stated that his team's chief concern is the depth, and ability to win, of their farm club. This comes after the last farm season (2011-12) ended with his Lake Placid Olympians winning just 17 games. "We've got to keep the cupboard well stocked. If someone gets hurt, we need to be able to plug in someone who can help offset the loss of their contributions. If someone is not playing up to par, we've got to be able to have a farm guy come in and either take his spot or pressure him into doing better." The Mariners reportedly offered 7 free agent contracts to young players for the Knights. We'll report in-depth on any signings tomorrow

Mariners Sign 5, Assign To Knights Land Depth Defensemen and Scoring ForwardsBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer The Moncton Mariners signed five free agents, and sent all of them to the Knights. C - Peter Holland A perfectly sized scoring center with upside, Holland will likely slot as the #1 center on the Knights. He's got solid hands and skates well, putting up 39 points in 45 games with Norfolk (AHL) last season. C - Nick Bonino A versatile, two-way center with upside, Bonino will either be the fourth line center or will play as a wing for the first time in his life. Solidly built, he's clutch, and can lead. Bonino previously played for the Kitchener Herbalists. D - Vic Bartley A smaller but physical offensive defenseman with experience in North America and Europe (he spent 2010-11 with Rogle of the Allsvendskan in Sweden), he will provide solid depth for the Knights, despite being an undrafted. The Mariners outbid the Philadelphia Legion to land Bartley's services. D - Oliver Lauridsen Lauridsen is huge. His size alone (6'6", 220) intimidates opponents. He's still raw and his to improve his decision making, but he does have upside and will provide solid depth. He went undrafted this year. D - Marco Scandella In 2010 he formed an excellent defense pair with Ottawa defenseman Travis Hamonic for Team Canada at World Juniors. He has a big frame (6'3", 210), all around upside, some offensive ability, an aggressive approach to defense, and can munch big minutes in a shutdown role. He battled a groin injury in Houston (AHL) last year, managing 17 points and a +2 in 45 games for the Aeros.

Knights name new assistant coach McCambridge joins MacLean's staffBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Knights have named Keith McCambridge an assistant coach, The Telegraph-Journal can confirm. Paul MacLean added McCambridge - who played three seasons for the Saint John Flames in the 1990s - as a defensive-minded coach after Al MacInnis resigned to take the head coaching position for the Wolfville Howl. The coaching staff now consists of Head Coach MacLean and his assistants Brett Hull and Keith McCambridge, one focusing on offense, the other on defense, as well as goalie coach Bill Ranford and his consultant (and fifth-string goalie) Marty Turco.

Knights Sign Ruhwedel Defenseman starred at UMass-Lowell last yearBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer The Moncton Mariners have signed defenseman Chad Ruhwedel to a contract that we're hearing conflicting reports about, as we're hearing either 1 or 5 years and the team never discloses anything. Ruhwedel, a 23-year-old San Diego native, played 41 games for the University of Massachusetts-Lowell River Hawks last year, putting up 23 points and a +16 rating. He was a first team East All-American, and a member of Hockey East's first All-Star Team as well as a Hockey East champion with the River Hawks. In 2010-11, his sophomore year, he was named to the NCAA All-Academic team.

Knights Romp In Debut Bonino hat trick paces blowout win over JasperBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer JASPER, Alberta - The Saint John Knights debuted for the first time tonight at the Jasper Park Arena, and Knights fans have to hope that this is a sign of things to come. Led by an unconscious hat trick by Nick Bonino and a three-point night by Shawn Matthias, the Knights absolutely lambasted the Jasper Trappers 8-3 on Monday night. 3:28 into the game, Bonino got started, as he got a rebound of a shot he took that was blocked, and made no mistake, picking his corner on Ben Scrivens for a 1-0 lead. 12 minutes later, TJ Brodie brought the Trappers fans to their feet and brought the Trappers into a tie game, but from then on, the rout was on, as Saint John would score three goals in a row - one each by Bonino, Viktor Stalberg, and Oliver Lauridsen. They would stop at nothing to put pucks on net, outshooting Jasper 16-3 in the second. After Mike Brown opened the third with a goal to make it 4-2 Saint John, the Knights reeled off four in a row - one each by Bonino (again), Shawn Matthias, Reilly Smith, and Colby Armstrong - that put them up 8-2. By the time Joakim Andersson added a garbage goal, it was way too late for Jasper to get back in it. One cannot blame the Trappers' loss on goalie Ben Scrivens. When you give up 52 shots on your goalie and he can't stand on his head, you really don't deserve to win. Keith Kinkaid stopped 34 of 37 in the Knights' blowout win. The two teams will rematch on Wednesday at Harbour Station. NOTES: -Not a single Knight was in the minuses. -The Knights were very physical with 28 hits on the Trappers. John Moore, Quinton Howden, and Viktor Stalberg - who had two points - led the way with 4. -Offseason trade acquisitions Reilly Smith, Colby Armstrong, and Viktor Stalberg all logged a goal.

No Kinks in the Armor Kinkaid backstops Knights to winBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer SEATTLE, Wash. - After back to back blowout losses with mostly Leland Irving in goal, Keith Kinkaid decided not to get kicked out of this one. And boy, was that a good thing for the Saint John Knights. Kinkaid and Michael Leighton each allowed one goal in a defensive struggle through regulation, but it was Leighton who cracked for the lone goal in the shootout as the Knights defeated the Seattle Thunderbirds 2-1 in a shootout at ShoWare Center. Cory Conacher scored the Knights' lone regulation goal in the last 90 seconds of the first, snapping home his own rebound, while Blair Betts, who had a hat trick on Friday in the T-Birds' 6-3 win, tied it up in the third. Viktor Stalberg scored the lone goal in the shootout in the third round, meaning Sean Monahan had to score. He was unsuccessful. The 2-2 Knights head home to host the Nanaimo Salmon Kings on Tuesday, while the Thunderbirds head all the way down to Orlando to take on the Orlando Solar Bears. NOTES: -Kinkaid leads NLHS Farm in save percentage and GAA. -The Knights went 0 for 5 on the power play. -There are rumors swirling around that the parent club Moncton Mariners have inquired with the Philadelphia Legion about a possible purchase of the Vermont Beasts franchise.

Turmoil Clouds Victory First line clicks, but fans don'tBy: Logan FitzPatrick Knights Beat Writer SAINT JOHN, N.B. - The Knights, fresh off a similar blowout win in Nanaimo (7-3 over the Salmon Kings), received a lukewarm, almost hostile, reception at Harbour Station today for their game against the Abbotsford Air Force. A talk radio host stated that the GM of the Mariners and Knights, Justin Fox, was in talks with the City of Burlington, who is losing the Vermont Beasts to Nashville after the season, about moving the farm club there full time. This did not bode well with the fans, even worse due to the fact that the organization did nothing to squash the rumors. The Mariners did pick up two Vermont alumni this offseason but fans are hoping this is a coincidence as Martin St. Louis and Viktor Stalberg are quality hockey players. The Knights on the ice did their best to ignore it all, posting another 7 spot in a 7-4 romp of the Air Force. Abbotsford built a 4-2 lead before Jason Zucker, Reilly Smith, Nick Bonino, Beau Bennett, and Eric Nystrom (interestingly enough all college alumni) put up five unanswered. Bonino, along with Captain Brian Strait and prospect Tomas Hertl, led the way with three points, and Keith Kinkaid stopped 44 of 48 in the win.
