The Burlington Beasts saw their first on-ice play tonight in an exhibition game at home against the Moncton Mariners. It was an up and down 8-7 loss to the Mariners that had a fight filled first period and saw captain Mike Richards end up with a -6 rating and starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury chased from the net just 9 minutes into the game.
"Well, it was obviously just an exhibition" said coach Leclair "but we still don't enjoy losing, the defense has to tighten up and I thought the team toughness was exploited in the first period when the beat up several of our players. I can promise the fans that we will be ready for the season opener"
It wasn't all negative though, the Beasts managed to outshoot the Mariners 35-30 and still only ended up losing by 1 goal, in fact taking a 7-6 lead with 8 minutes remaining. No player took more than 1 minor penalty.
Center Eric Staal was named the third star of the game with 1 goal and 2 assists. Other standout players were Loui Eriksson with 1 goal and 2 assists and Ryan Suter racked up 3 assists in the game.
Defensively despite giving up 8 goals the Beasts shut down the Mariners power play going 2 for 2 on the PK. Dennis Wideman delivered a game high 4 hits. And perhaps the best news for Beasts fans was the solid play of backup goaltender Tomas Vokoun who stopped 19 of 23 shots in just over 50 minutes of play.

Breaking News from Burlington...
We have just learned that the Burlington Beasts have acquired Herbalists captain Scott Hartnell in exchange for James Neal. The Beasts will also receive a conditional draft pick depending on Neal's off-season re-rate, currently it is a 3rd round pick that could become a 2nd.
While the team was high on Neal and his potential for the future, the chance to bring in a long time favorite of GM Ryan Voshell was too good to pass on. Clearly the Beasts gave up more talent in the deal, but no winner can be determined for several seasons until we see how Neal develops and how the Beasts draft pick turns out.

Beasts 1/3rd Season ReportBy: Dickie Dunn Beasts Beat Writer Burlington - 26 games into the 76 game schedule in their inaugural season, it's time to take an in depth look at how your Burlington Beasts and their farm affiliate Montpelier Republicans are shaping up. The Beasts15-7-4 with 34 points 1st place, Eastern Conference The Beasts headed into the season with tempered expectations, most had figured the team as middle of the road club that would barely make the playoffs. Instead we have found a team that has climbed up the ladder to take hold of first place, despite a loss to the second place Ottawa 67's earlier today. The Beasts have the second highest winning percentage behind only the western conference leading Chatham Maroons and have scored the fourth most goals in the league with 63. The team has been extremely lucky so far to avoid any injuries and have been the least penalized team in the league. This has helped them to run the second best combined special teams value in the league at 105%. Players who are meeting expectations include star centers Mike Richards and Eric Staal. Each player has scored 9 goals and 12 assists for 21 points in 26 games. Winger Phil Kessel has potted 8 goals and linemate Loui Eriksson leads the team with 17 assists. The surprise player of the team has to be Martin Erat, who is not short on skill, but has been skating only 4th line minutes all season yet is still third on the team with 7 goals scored. The biggest busts this season must include trade acquisitions Scott Hartnell and Erik Cole. While Hartnell is third in scoring from the wings with 9 points, he does so with 7 assists and only 2 goals, the second goal coming against he 67's today. But Cole has been far and away the biggest disappointment for the team, he has not faced any of the health problems that have plagued his career, yet he has failed to register a single point in 26 games, this has resulted in his ice time being limited to just 8 minutes per game, fewest of all Beast skaters. Another area of concern has been in net, despite the first place effort Marc-Andre Fleury has been inconsistent all season, backup Tomas Vokoun looked sharp early but started to fade in recent weeks. With Ondrej Pavelec in the system, the two Beasts netminders need to start earning their pay, or they could find themselves on the trading block or left exposed to the offseason expansion draft. The Republicans11-12-3 with 25 points 6th place, Eastern Conference Just as the Beasts have surprised with their success, the Republicans have disappointed with their failures. Pre-season expectations had the Republicans as one of the favorites to win the farm league championship. The biggest reason for the failings has been on defense and goaltending, the Republicans have surrendered a league worst 73 goals through 26 games while potting only 57 of their own. First pair defensemen Andrej Sekera and Oskars Barulis are each carrying a -10 rating, while Mikael Backlund leads the team with a -1. Veteran defensive leaders Cory Sarich and Paul Mara are at -8 and -7 respectively. That kind of defensive effort will kill any goaltender including Ondrej Pavelec, who despite the poor display in front of him is still able to boast a save percentage of .907 The pre-season saw young Colin Wilson finish with the scoring lead at 15 points in 9 games. However it's Wilson who has been the biggest question mark for the team so far with only 14 points in 26 regular season games. It's an effort that has seen Wilson demoted from the first line by coach Terry Murray in favor of Artem Anisimov who is one of the few bright spots for the club this season with a team leading 16 assists. Winger Petr Prucha leads in the goal scoring department with 16.
What can we expect as we look at the next 25 games? Well, as evidenced by the first third of the season, it is to expect the unexpected. Will the Beasts hold up in first place or fall back to the pack? Will the Republicans continue to struggle or will they find a way to protect the net and turn the season around? Will any of the Beasts get the call for the upcoming all-star game in February? The only way to answer these questions is on the ice, so stay tuned and follow all of the latest Beasts news here with the Dickie Dunn and the Burlington Free Press.

Beast Top Cits 5-2By: Dickie Dunn Beasts Beat Writer Burlington - Spreading the wealth was the theme for the Beasts today as five different skaters managed to find the back of the net in a 5-2 victory over the Halifax Citadels. Through one period the game was a goaltending showcase. Beasts goalie Marc-Andre Fleury turned aside 15 shots while his counterpart Roberto Luongo stopped a whopping 17 first period attempts for the Citadels. It was a wide open, back-and-forth type of effort for both sides as the netminders were tested constantly in the opening frame. Finally it was 5:32 into the second period before Scott Hartnell tallied with his third goal of the season. The Beasts lead would be short lived however as the Cits would tie it up just 17 seconds later on a wrister by Pavel Datsyuk. The Citadels actually carried their first period momentum over to record another 15 shots in the second period, but it was the Beasts David Legwand at 15:52 that would have Burlington leading 2-1 after two. Defenseman Braydon Coburn was credited with an assist on each goal for his first multi-point game of the season. Early in the third Steve Sullivan had a great chance to increase the lead but he missed the net with a backhand attempt, Halifax was able to gather the puck and work a counter attack down the ice where Mikael Samuelsson evened the score at 2-2. That's when the Beasts power play unit went to work. With Matt Cooke off for tripping, Kyle Okposo scored with the man advantage to put the Beasts ahead 3-2 with what would eventually be the game winning goal. David Krejci and Eric Staal were awarded the assists. Less than two minutes later it was Okposo and Staal connecting again on the power play, this time it was Staal who separated Scott Gomez from the puck and then initiated a give and go with Okposo, he dished the puck and headed for the net where Okposo found him and Staal was able to bury a wrist shot to give the Beasts the 4-2 lead. The Beasts must have found their way in that third period as they limited the Citadels to only four shots and Patric Hornqvist was the fifth different Burlington skater to score when he iced the game at 15:41 with his fourth goal of the season, David Legwand picked up the assist which strangely enough was the veteran center's first helper of the season. The Beasts will enjoy two days off before welcoming the Cebu Typhoons into Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Notes: -Legwand, Okposo, Hornqvist and Coburn all enjoyed their first multi-point games of the season. -Defensemen Mark Giordano and Dennis Wideman share the longest current scoring drought at seven games each. -Eric Staal and David Krejci each lead the team with a modest three game point scoring streak. Staal so far has five points during this streak. -The Republicans two game winning streak ended with a 4-3 overtime loss to the Gatineau Bolts. However the point gained from making it through regulation means that the Republicans are out of last place. Montpelier and Nova Scotia each have 30 points, but the Republicans are ranked ahead by virtue of having more wins. They will visit the Swift Current Warriors in two days, it's a game that the team must win if they are to avoid slipping out of the playoff race all together this early in the season.
