Coaching Staff to Olympians: Learn from Shipwrecks' Mistakes Fox Announces Youth Movement
By: Logan FitzPatrick Olympians Beat Writer
Last season, the Watertown Shipwrecks were living it up. In the regular season, that is.
The team cruised through everyone, only having one cold stretch (3-5-2 to end the season), and that was because they didn't need the points: they had clinched the NLHSF Western Division early.
However, they were worried after losing their first playoff game, 2-1 in overtime to the Manitoba Moose at the Watertown Civic Center. They woke up, slaughtered the Moose 5-0 the next night, and dusted them off in five games.
Next were the Carbondale Pups. The Shipwrecks beat them in five, too, losing Game 3 3-1 at SIU Arena, but edging them in the other four.
However, on the other side of the spectrum, the Beauport Harfangs struggled in the early going, but caught fire, sneaking in as the #3 seed in the NLHSF East. Then, they slaughtered the Oland Exports in a lopsided sweep, then edged the barnstorming Manila Hurricanes squad in six.
It was two opposite forces going at it. One team easily entered, the other came off a war where they were an overtime goal away from having a Game 7.
The Shipwrecks took the first two games at the Civic Center by scores of 5-2 and 3-2 (OT). The Owls got back in it with two brilliant 2-1 games at the Arena Marcel Bedard, then took the series lead back home with a 3-2 thriller in Game 5. The Shipwrecks barely survived Game 6, winning it in overtime back in the Quebec City suburb 2-1, but fell the next day 4-2, torched twice by Jakub Voracek.
After the game, an irate Ted Nolan was quoted as saying that the Shipwrecks did not like to think. One off-season later, the Shipwrecks are bound for San Diego, following the Mutiny's relocation to Los Angeles, and the Harfangs are preparing to defend their title.
Lake Placid Olympians coaching staff told the players today to learn from the Shipwrecks' mistakes, which is to say, don't take anyone lightly. The Harfangs went from only in the playoffs by 2 points to champions, simply because the Exports (now the Chicoutimi Cucumbers), Hurricanes (now the Seattle Thunderbirds), and Shipwrecks took them lightly, particularly Oland. They gave up 5 goals a game after having the best defense in the regular season.
The Olympians' coaching staff, consisting of a re-hired Michel Therrien (head coach), Gary Roberts (strength), Garry Unger (defense), Bill Guerin (offense), and Johnson City native Mike Dunham (goaltending), was introduced to the players that will start the season in the Adirondacks today. All but Therrien were either New York natives or played AHL hockey in either Moncton or Upstate New York. Dunham is the NY native, Guerin played for the Utica Devils, and Roberts and Unger played for the Golden Flames.
At a press conference, Justin Fox, GM of the Olympians and parent Moncton Mariners, and Therrien announced the team will be committed to young players more than winning.
"While winning is nice, we'd rather have a last-place team with improving young players than a first-place team entirely of veterans," said Fox, via conference call from an Oshawa area hotel, where the Mariners are staying en route to their last stops on their summer workout trip: They hit Owen Sound yesterday, and are going on to Val-d'Or, Rouyn-Noranda, Rimouski, Baie-Comeau, Saint John, Bathurst, and Charlottetown before camp opens in Moncton on August 9.
The quote was a bit of a shock for 30+ year olds Dominic Moore, Michael Rupp, Stephen Reinprecht, Sheldon Brookbank, and Steve Montador, as well as Kurtis Foster and recently-acquired Eric Nystrom, who are in their late 20s. Toby Petersen is in no danger, however, as he is personal friends with Fox.
The Olympians projected depth chart, based off of this:
Scoring Line 1: Ville Leino - Peter Mueller - Joffrey Lupul Scoring Line 2: Beau Bennett - Adam Henrique - Zack Stortini Energy Line: Lance Bouma - Zack Smith - Joe Vitale Scoring Line 3: Stephen Reinprecht - Toby Petersen - Jordan Schroeder Spares: Dominic Moore, Michael Rupp, Eric Nystrom
Defense Pair 1: Kurtis Foster - Cam Barker Defense Pair 2: Erik Gustafsson - Anton Stralman Defense Pair 3: Brian Strait - Matt Gilroy Spares: Sheldon Brookbank, Steve Montador
Goalie 1: Robin Lehner Goalie 2: Mark Dekanich
This would reunited one of Boston University's best defensive pairs of the last 20 years, as Gilroy won the 2009 Hobey Baker and Strait was an alternate captain. There would also be 10 rookies in the lineup, including both goalies.

Olympians Announce Captains Gilroy, Lupul Alternates
By: Logan Fitzpatrick Olympians Beat Writer
Today, the Lake Placid Olympians announced that Peter Mueller is the team's captain for 2011-12, with Matt Gilroy and Joffrey Lupul his alternates.
Mueller, a 23 year old American, will be the franchise's second captain, as Joe Corvo, the captain in 2010-11, is no longer in the organization. He produced 16 points in 23 games with the team last season, and went pointless in 6 games with the big club. Only seven players had more than Mueller, and all but one (Dominic Moore, who played 57) had played every game.
Gilroy, a 26 year old American, will be an alternate. He put up 3 points and a -4 in 34 games last season. His previous captain experience was in college, where he led Boston University to the 2009 NCAA national championship.
Lupul is a 27 year old native of Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta. He played all 76 games last season, producing 42 points, second behind Stephen Reinprecht's 45. He led all Nova Scotia Northern Lights forwards in blocked shots, with 41. He will be playing on the first line, and has experience as an alternate, being one with the AHL's Cincinnati Mighty Ducks from 2003-05.

Slow Start Haunts Olympians Harfangs Score Four in First to Beat Olympians
By: Logan Fitzpatrick Olympians Recaps
It was a disastrous debut for the Lake Placid Olympians.
At least, to start.
Robin Lehner and his defense allowed four goals in the first period, and those were the difference. Despite outscoring Beauport 3-2 the rest of the game, Anton Stralman and Ville Leino's two assists apiece went for naught as the Harfangs doubled up on the Olympians 6-3 at the Arena Marcel-Bedard.
The defending champions got two apiece from Peter Regin and Tomas Kopecky.
The Olympians did stir up a little emotion in the second, though. Peter Mueller and Ryan Shannon both snagged goals, trimming the deficit to 4-2 and worrying Beauport coach Guy Boucher.
It was irrelevant. Kopecky added his two goals, making it 6-2, but the Olympians tacked on an extra goal by Mike Rupp.
Robin Lehner made 29 saves in his debut.
Coach Michel Therrien assured that this wouldn't happen in the season.
"It's a meaningless preseason game, sure. But we can't let this happen. We've got a solid young group of players on this team, and for facing the defending champions, we did a good job of settling down after that slow start."

Beasts Put Out Olympians' Fire 4 Goal Third Paces Vermont
By: Logan Fitzpatrick Olympians Beat Writer
LAKE PLACID - The Olympians got off to a better start the second time around than the first time.
Only problem is, they ended the way they started.
Four third period goals paced the Vermont Beasts to a 6-1 blitz of the Olympians at Herb Brooks Arena at the Olympic Center last night.
Lake Placid's lone goal came in the second. Stefan Meyer deflected an Eric Nystrom shot, evening the score at 1 after the Beasts had taken the lead on a Dustin Jeffrey tally.
From there, the roof fell in.
Before the end of the period, Blake Geoffrion scored on a Viktor Stalberg rebound, putting the Beasts ahead again. Then, in what felt like no time at all, Derek Stepan got his third of the preseason, Mikkel Boedker added a pair, and Jeffrey tacked on another.
This time Michel Therrien wasn't as forgiving.
"6-1?! With this good young group of guys?! What the HELL is going on here? This is flat-out unacceptable. We're going back to the drawing board, and we better get these four-goals-against periods out of our heads if we're going to beat the Clippers." He then stormed out of the press conference.
Robin Lehner made 31 saves and assumed some responsibility.
"I was having some issues controlling rebounds, and a couple of those led to goals. I still have much to learn about playing over here," said the Swedish netminder.
NOTES:
-The lone bright spot was Ville Leino in the faceoff circle.

Olympians Finally Win! Abdelkader and Leino Nab Two As Olympians Sink Clippers
By: Logan Fitzpatrick Olympians Beat Writer
SYDNEY, Nova Scotia - "Bouchard wins the draw. Four, three, two, one, OLYMPIANS WIN! THE THIRD TIME IS THE CHARM!"
Those were the words on the radio last night, as Lake Placid picked up their first win of the preseason in a come-from-behind 5-3 triumph over the Cape Breton Clippers at Centre 200 last night.
The first went scoreless, but the Olympians scored first for the first time this season 1:09 into the second frame, as Ville Leino blasted a one-timer past Brian Boucher on a pass from Ryan Shannon, giving the Olympians a 1-0 lead.
45 seconds later, Leino, looking for a second, fired a slapshot. It veered off course, but that issue was corrected by Justin Abdelkader, extending the lead to 2-0.
The Clippers brewed up a storm, scoring three times in an eight-minute window to snag the lead. The goals went to Tyler Ennis, Pierre-Marc Bouchard, and Pierre-Alexander Parenteau. But less than a minute after the third goal, Leino snagged an Anton Stralman rebound and tied it up at 3 apiece heading into the break.
Abdelkader added a second on a line change. He came on the ice as Anton Stralman cleared it, and buried a biscuit in the basket and giving Lake Placid a lead they would not surrender. Robin Lehner also added an assist!
With five seconds to go, a late Clippers chance was thwarted by solid defense, and Zack Smith tacked on an empty netter, his first of the preseason, giving the Olympians the 5-3 lead.
These teams get Thursday off and play again on Sunday at Herb Brooks Arena.
NOTES:
-Alec Martinez looked great tonight, as he went +3 and had two blocked shots. He's tied with Leino and Abdelkader in plus/minus (+1) for first on the Olympians.
-He may only have had two assists and gone -2, but the Clippers sure will be nursing their five Bobby Butler bruises. Young player looking up!
-Though still far from a great game, Robin Lehner improved vastly, allowing 3 goals, half of his pregame GAA.
-Brian Boucher just looked horrible.

Torch Burns Out Olympians Blow Third Period Lead in Loss to Dutchmen
By: Logan FitzPatrick Olympians Beat Writer
DUTCHMEN (1-0-0) 6, OLYMPIANS (0-1-0) 4
KITCHENER, Ont. - The Olympians just needed to hold a one-goal lead for 10 minutes to open with a road victory against the Dutchmen following a Toby Petersen tally.
Unfortunately, they couldn't hold it.
Brad Staubitz, David Desharnais, and Andreas Nodl scored consecutive third period goals to pace the Kitchener Dutchmen to a 6-4 see saw game that saw the Dutchmen blow 1-0 and 3-1 leads and the Olympians lose a 4-3 lead.
The defense looked a lot better than the one that got annihilated 7-1 in Beauport on the last day of the preseason, but couldn't hang on to a lead for 10 minutes to win.
Anton Stralman and Alec Martinez showed Mariner management that they want a callup, as Martinez chipped in with 2 assists and 1 blocked shot while Stralman blocked 6 shots.
The Olympians failed to kill their only penalty (a third period tripping call to Sheldon Brookbank), as Desharnais broke the 4-4 deadlock. Nodl added an insurance marker.
OLYMPIAN OF THE GAME PRESENTED BY SUBWAY: This was a tough one, but us at the Adirondack Times went with ALEC MARTINEZ, with two assists, a blocked shot, and going +2. RUNNER UP: Toby Petersen (1G, 1A, +1)
The Olympians will host the Cambridge Winter Hawks at Herb Brooks Arena on Monday.
The American East was an unlucky division, with Carbondale and Vermont both falling by two and Baltimore getting hammered 9-2 against the Reno Racers, who got two hat tricks.

OLYMPIANS TO RELOCATE Fox: "It's too small of a population base to work with"
By: Logan FitzPatrick Olympians Beat Writer
Crushing news to Olympians fans: your team is relocating.
Today, Justin Fox called a press conference in Seattle, where he is with the Mariners (who play the Metropolitans tomorrow) and Olympians (who are heading to the suburbs to take on the Thunderbirds).
"It pains me to say this just as the team is catching fire," said Fox. "I feel bad to relocate this team after all the promotional work - it's just too small of a population base to work with."
He has a point - Lake Placid has a population under 3000, and an arena that seats 7500.
"We've got ten candidate cities to move to," continued the GM. Said cities:
-Wilkes-Barre, PA - It would be nice for Fox to put a team in NEPA, where he lives. -Des Moines, IA - Still hurting from losing the Iowa Chops to Cedar Park, TX. -Rimouski, QC - A good opportunity to steal fans from Montreal and Quebec and only 3 1/2 hours away. -Fredericton, NB - Close by and keeps the Mariners in tight within the province of New Brunswick. -Charlottetown, PEI - A chance to win over PEI in the ongoing promo war with Nova Scotia. -San Jose - A bona fide chance to score fans in Northern California who are torn between LA and Seattle. -Twin Cities, MN - A hockey-mad market that could also be fan theft from Chicago. -Calgary - They lost their expansion team due to bankrupt ownership and they deserve a shot. -Cleveland - Also a decent hockey market. They lost their NHL team due to the fact that their arena was 45 minutes outside the city. -Rouyn-Noranda, QC - A chance to steal fans from Montreal, Quebec, AND Ottawa along with a bilingual audience like Moncton.
Four will be out of the running this week, and four the next week until we are down to a Canadian and US city.
Olympians fans, cherish the time this team has left. Hopefully they can go out on a winning note, unlike Sydney did with the Northern Lights.
On the bright, hockey-related note, the Olympians are 2-1-1 in their last 4 after going 0-3-1 to start. They hammered Baltimore 7-4 last night despite the loss of leading scorer Ville Leino to call-up. They visit the Thunderbirds tomorrow, followed by a trip home on Tuesday with the Indians.

Four Cities Out of Running for Olympians Two American Cities and Two Canadian Cities ruled out
By: Logan FitzPatrick Olympians Beat Writer
LAKE PLACID - Following a 4-3 overtime loss to Saskatoon, the Olympians announced the cities that were phased out in the first wave of city eliminiation for the upcoming relocation.
USA CITIES -Des Moines, IA - The Mariners cited mediocre attendance for the Iowa Chops and Iowa Stars, along with distance, in their decision.
-San Jose, CA - The Mariners said that despite strong attendance, HP Pavilion was too large for minor leagues and that San Jose was too far away from Moncton.
CANADIAN CITIES
-Calgary, AB - Same reasons as San Jose. Maybe another NLHS team will move or expand there?
-Fredericton, NB - Aitken Centre is kind of old, and the University of New Brunswick takes priority.
CITIES STILL IN THE RUNNING -Wilkes-Barre, PA (Mohegan Sun Arena) -Cleveland, OH (Quicken Loans Arena) -Twin Cities (Minneapolis-St Paul), MN (Xcel Energy Center/Target Center) -Rimouski, QC (Colisee de Rimouski) -Rouyn-Noranda, QC (Arena Iamgold) -Charlottetown, P.E.I. (Charlottetown Civic Centre)
Four more will be eliminated on Wednesday night.

Final Two Cities Remain Olympians Eliminate Two More
By: Logan FitzPatrick Olympians Beat Writer
LAKE PLACID - Prior to the Olympians' 7-5 loss to the Saskatoon Indians, the Olympians announced the final four cities eliminated from the race to relocation.
USA CITIES -Wilkes-Barre, PA - Fox saw the lack of hockey knowledge among most fans as a big detriment.
-Twin Cities, MN - Minnesota had minor league hockey once and stayed away in droves, why try again?
CANADIAN CITIES -Charlottetown, P.E.I. - The Mariners announced plans to hold training camp there next season, but the Civic Centre is too old and Charlottetown too small for a full-time team.
-Rouyn-Noranda, QC - Arena Iamgold was determined as too small, and the team would be too isolated with only Gatineau as a 'local' rival.
THE FINAL TWO
-Rimouski, Quebec (CANADA) - Colisee de Rimouski
-Cleveland, Ohio (USA) - Quicken Loans Arena
Profiles for the cities to come later today in the Adirondack Times.

Relocation: Canada's RepresentativeRimouski, QuebecBy: Logan FitzPatrick Arena Facts - Colisee de RimouskiCapacity - 5062 Notable Events - 2009 Memorial Cup Distance From Moncton - 511 km Built - 1966 - renovated early 2000s Current Team - Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) Hockey in Rimouski is a fantastic experience, as many people learned at the 2009 Memorial Cup (won by Windsor). The Oceanic are relatively new to the south shores of the St. Lawrence - moving from St-Jean in 1995 - but have been solidly supported. They had the sixth-best attendance in the QMJHL last year (with all teams ahead of them in bigger arenas - Quebec, Moncton, Saint John, Halifax, and Cape Breton), and have stayed in the top 7 since inception. Seattle forward Sidney Crosby has fond memories of his days with the Oceanic, as does Quebec Nordiques forward Brad Richards. Both went to the Memorial Cup in different years - Crosby in 2005 (where the Oceanic fell in the finals to host London) and Richards in 2000 (when they won it all over Barrie in Halifax). The city has a long tradition of hockey and even hosted the 2009 Memorial Cup, selling out the whole tourney despite the Oceanic's loss in the tiebreaker to Windsor. Rimouski could work well for the Mariners franchise - a dedicated fan base, an arena with an awesome atmosphere (that was recently renovated), and a nice chance to earn more fans in Eastern Quebec.
