The Legion are now leading the league in one category... number of times being shut out
The Colts blanked the Legion 2-0 today. The second shutout against the team this season, and this despite outshooting the Colts 35-28 and being awarded the only two power plays of the game. The Legwand-Gionta-Hornqvist line was -2 in their team low 10 minutes of ice-time. Brandon Dubinsky led the team with 6 shots, of course none of which found the back of the net. This drops backup goalie Justin Peters below .500, now with a 2-3-1 record in 6 starts. It's been rumored that the team will bring up Jhonas Enroth from Vermont to start the remaining 4 games required from the backup.
After the Christmas break, the Legion will travel up to Winnipeg to take on the Jets.

Game 35
Legion 5 - Jets 1
After being shutout by the Colts, the Legion bounced back in a big way with a 5-1 beating of the Winnipeg Jets. John Tavares led the way with a hat trick and Jhonas Enroth earned the victory in his first start with the Legion.
Tavares opened the scoring with two goals in the first and Martin Erat closed out the period with another. It looked like the Jets would come out flying in the second frame when Ryan Kesler scored just 55 second in, but the Legion shut down that attack and scored two more times, it was Curtis Glencross and finally the Tavares hat trick goal.
In the third period, the Legion sat on their lead and went into total defense mode. The shot total for the last period was 5-3 for the Legion. While some consider that a boring period of hockey, the Legion fans are happy to see it as the wins have been scarce this season.
Next, the Legion stay on the road and fly down to KC to take on the Scouts.

Game 36
Legion 5 - Scouts 1
An identical score and back-to-back wins have the Legion and their fans feeling good again. John Tavares once again led the way with a goal and four assists, he has found another level with new linemates Jeff Carter and Brandon Dubinsky. The team once again allowed just a single second period goal, and Enroth earned his second consecutive start and victory.
Although they weren't able to sit on the lead in this game with just a 2-1 edge heading into the third, the squad instead stepped on the gas and scored three times to bury the Scouts. Two goals by Dubinsky and another by Carter (his second of the game) meant that all five came from the first line. Shea Weber also added two assists, the only other Legionnaire on the scoresheet.
Tomorrow the Legion welcome the league leading Nordiques to Philadelphia.

Game 37
Legion 4 - Nordiques 3 (SO)
The tides have definitely turned on the Legion's season, last week it would be unthinkable that they could take out the number one team in the league, yet here they are after a shootout victory over the Nordiques, inching closer to the 6th spot.
The Nordiques did a good job of holding the first unit in check, Jeff Carter did open the scoring but that was it. Martin Erat added a second period goal and it looked good for the Legion, up 2-0 halfway through. But maybe they let the recent success get to their head, or perhaps Pekka Rinne was rusty, because in a matter of one minute and nine seconds the Nordiques scored three times to take the lead. Luckily the Legion have a few grinders who can score when it counts because Patric Hornqvist added the tying goal in the third period to send game to overtime.
The Legion outshot the Nords 4-0 in the overtime frame, but nothing got past Ryan Miller. So a seven round shootout was needed to decide the victor. Evgeni Malkin, Brad Richards, Ryan Getzlaf and Danny Briere were all stopped by Rinne, while Miller blocked shots by Jeff Carter, Martin Erat, John Tavares and Brandon Dubinsky and the teams were scoreless after four rounds. Finally Mikko Koivu broke through in round 5, but Curtis Glencross kept the Legion alive by matching the goal. Michael Grabner and Gabriel Bourque were stopped in round 6 and Drew Stafford failed to score in round 7.
Finally, the captain David Legwand was up in round 7. He took the puck at center ice, skated mostly straight in on Miller the fellow American and former teammate... then with not too much movement, Leggy went backhand to forehand, gave a leg lift and tucked the puck in next to the pipe just above the left pad. The Legion had thrilled the fans and taken their third straight victory!
Next up, the expansion Mountain Men will be in town.

Game 38
Legion 6 - Mountain Men 4
With Jhonas Enroth back in net, and the hangover from a big victory, the Legion were actually tested by the expansion Mountain Men in a 6-4 win.
Edmonton's Adrian Aucoin scored his first goal of the season to open the scoring and set the Legion on their heels. But from there the original NLHS team had a point to prove and ripped their way to a 4-1 lead into the second period on goals by Wilson, Glencross, Hornqvist and McDonagh. Stephen Weiss cut the lead to 4-2 to prove that the Mountain Men weren't going away, but John Tavares closed out the period with a goal to run the lead back to 3.
In the third period, the Mountain Men showed tremendous resolve and veteran Ray Whitney showed that he still has his hands as he scored twice, including a power play goal to bring the expansion team within one goal as the score stood at 5-4 with 11 minutes remaining. But the Legion didn't fold under the pressure and it was the top unit once again as heroes when Jeff Carter buried a Tavares drop pass to seal the scoring and the Legion shut it down in the last five minutes for a fourth straight victory.
The bonus in this game was the Nova Scotia Titans recent slide, the Legion pass them in the standings and now sit in the 6th and final playoff spot. A position that looked so far out of reach earlier in the season when this team was muddling around in last place.
The Legion look to continue their winning ways when they head out to Joplin to take on the Outlaws next.

Game 39
Legion 4 - Outlaws 1
This one turned out to be fairly easy as the Legion run up the longest winning streak in the league with a 4-1 win over the Outlaws who managed just six shots on goal in each of the first and third periods.
The second line showed that they can carry the game, two goals by Gabriel Bourque were enough to win on their own. The team also got goals from Martin Erat and Slava Voynov. Jhonas Enroth needed just 24 saves to move his record with the Legion to 4-0-0.
The Outlaws make a return visit to Philadelphia on Sunday. It will be interesting to see if the Legion stick with the hot hand and start Enroth again, or return him to Burlington as they have satisfied the league's backup goalie requirements.

Game 40
Legion 6 - Outlaws 1
No contest today as the Legion pummel the Outlaws again. Six different Legionnaires had multi-point games, led by John Tavares and Shea Weber with three points each. The team poured on 46 shots to completely overwhelm Jimmy Howard and earn their sixth straight victory.
With just a lone score by Jeff Carter in the first period, this one looking like the Outlaws might keep it close. Then Curtis Glencross, Tavares and Weber added tallies in the second period to take complete control. In the third period Gabriel Bourque made the score 5-0. It wasn't until about six minutes remaining that Marc-Eduoard Vlasic finally got the Outlaws on the scoresheet, but Tavares scored his second goal moments later to emphasize the victory.
The Legion are now in the top half of the league standings, tied with the Metropolitans for 10th place. Meanwhile, John Tavares is now third in league scoring, just one point behind Daniel Sedin for second place. Nobody is even close to catching Matt Duchene right now who holds a nine point lead over Sedin. Of course it was higher, but the Legion managed to hold Duchene off the scoresheet in the last two games.
Next up tomorrow will see the Legion travel across the continent to face the Mountain Men in Edmonton.

Game 41
Mountain Men 4 - Legion 2
This time the Mountain Men proved that the previous matchup was no fluke, they controlled the play all day and frustrated the Legion in both ends. The loss ends the Legion's six game win streak and brought an abrupt end to the good feelings as there are two big games against the rival Pistols on the schedule this week.
Taylor Hall and Jordan Eberle scored in the first for Edmonton to send a shock to the Legionnaires and carry a 2-0 lead into the locker room. The Legion attempted to mount a comeback Shea Weber scored just four seconds into the second, and Curtis Glencross tied the game at 3:41. However the Mountain Men had something to prove today and at 3:49 Patrik Elias netted the game winner with Eberle adding an insurance goal later in the frame.
In the third period, Edmonton limited the Legion to just three shots on goal which earned Jonathan Quick his 15th win of the season. Luckily the Titans also lost today so the Legion keep control of the 6th spot for now.
On Wednesday the Legion stay on the road and head down to Dallas to take on the Pistols.

Some late recaps from the last two weeks...
Day 42 was a tough 2-1 loss against the Pistols with Steve Montador scoring the lone goal for the Legion and Jhonas Enroth taking his first loss of the season. This one was a goalie showdown as each Enroth faced 40 shots and Brian Elliott saw 41. Both goalies earned a star of the game and Derek Roy assisted on both Pistols goals in the third period.
Game 43 featured the same matchup in a return game which marked the beginning of the second half of the season. The Legion did earn a point on home ice, but they unfortunately still lost in the overtime period by a score of 4-3. The Legion once again outshot the Pistols by one shot (39-38), and once again it was Elliott who was one goal better than Enroth. The Legion goals in this one were scored by Patric Hornqvist, Brandon Dubinsky and Sergei Kostitsyn. The Pistols hero was Marian Hossa who tallied twice including the OT winner.
Game 44 was more of the same, the Legion fell in a shootout to the Colts 3-2. Four straight losses after their big win streak to get them into a playoff spot. This game had Pekka Rinne return to net and he fared well after a lengthy run by Enroth, stopping 28 shots. He failed to block even one in the shootout however which sealed the Legionnaires fate. Goals came from Patric Hornqvist and Jeff Carter. The lucky thing for the Legion is that the teams behind them did just a poorly through this stretch, particularly the fading Titans.

Game 45, who would you hate to face in the midst of a losing streak but a top team in the league, Hamilton Tigers. That was the Legion task in this contest. The Tigers had control throughout the first two period and took a 2-0 lead into the third, that's when the Legion exploded for 23 shots on goal and four goals. David Legwand and Jeff Carter each scored one and John Tavares found the back of the net twice. Two other Tiger goals meant that the third period ended at 4-4 and no team scored in the OT period. So the Legion headed to another shootout. This time Rinne was ready and stopped all Tigers shooters while Martin Erat put one in for the Legion to give his team a 5-4 victory.
Game 46 was a head-to-head matchup with the Titans as the teams battle for that final playoff spot. The Legion rode their momentum from the Tigers game to a 4-2 victory against the Titans. Pekka Rinne got his third consecutive start and earned another victory which brought his record for the season up to .500 (15-15-3). Goals came from Curtis Glencross, Patric Hornqvist and another two goal effort from John Tavares.
Game 47 what should have been an easy game against the expansion Flyers turned into a close call. The Legion brought Jhonas Enroth back into net for this game, and held on to a 1-0 lead for much of the game thanks to a Steve Montador score. The third period he faced 21 shots from the Flyers and gave up the tying goal to Francois Beauchimen. It looked like this one might go into overtime, but with 1:53 remaining, Colin Wilson scored on the power play and the Legion hung on for the 2-1 victory.
Game 48 featured a matchup with the Seattle Metropolitans and another nail-biting finish. Pekka Rinne was back in net and had good support for the first portion of the game. The Legion got goals from Martin Erat and Colin Wilson, and allowed just seven shots in each of the first two periods. But it's never that easy, and sure enough Eric Staal made it interesting with his score midway through the third, and the Metros rallied with 17 shots as they attempted to get the tying goal. Rinne was up to the task however and the Legion escsped with the 2-1 win, now their fourth in a row.
Game 49 was another meeting with the badly slumping Titans who are now down to eighth in the conference. This time a 6-2 victory for the Legion behind goals from six different scorers and an easy 22 save effort from Rinne. The top lines took this one as Jeff Carter, John Tavares and Brandon Dubinsky all netted one for the first line and Curtis Glencross and Colin Wilson tallied for the second line. The other goal was scored by Shea Weber with an assist by Wilson. The Legion however have remained in sixth place as the rest of the Wales playoff teams have also played well. The good news is that the lead over seventh is now up to six points which gives a bit of cushion as the team takes on the 67's today.

Game 50, The Legion took on a scrappy 67's squad and came out on top 3-1 to keep their win streak alive. The game saw a great night from Brandon Dubinsky as he grabbed a hat trick, scoring all three Legion goals.
Game 51, The latest installment of the "Commissioner's Cup". This one is always a close game, and today was no exception. Two second period goals from the M's had the home crowd on edge, but two Legion scores (by Gabriel Bourque and Curtis Glencross) in the third sent it to OT where Jeff Carter brought the win streak up to seven games. The two teams will meet again on Wednesday.
Also today the KC Scouts ran their win streak up to five games, which means the Legion leapfrog the Misfits and now sit in the fifth playoff spot in the Wales Conference.

Game 52
Legion Match Record Streak
The Legion have now won eight straight games, which ties the franchise record originally set in NLHS3 (Game 66-73). And the ten game point streak is the longest in franchise history.
It was a 4-3 win over the Mariners which the Legion controlled from the start with two goals by Sergei Kostitsyn and John Tavares. The Tavares goal was his 200th point with the Legion. The Mariners scored to open the second period but were quickly beaten back down with two more goals from Jeff Carter and Curtis Glencross. The assist from Tavares was his 70th point of this season.
Pekka Rinne hit the 20 win mark again, it's still to be seen if he can reach 40 for the third straight season. He would have to win 20 of the last 32 games which would mean a huge finish to the season for the Legion.
On friday, the Legion attempt to set their all-time win streak in Victoria when the visit the Timbermen.
